Candle on the Water

"Candle on the Water"
by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn
from Pete's Dragon (1977)

I'll be your candle on the water ...
My love for you will always burn.
I know you're lost and drifting,
But the clouds are lifting,
Don't give up you'll have somewhere to turn.

I'll be your candle on the water ...
'Till ev'ry wave is warm and bright.
My soul is there beside you,
Let this candle guide you,
Soon you'll see a golden stream of light.

A cold and friendless tide has found you ...
Don't let the stormy darkness pull you down.
I'll paint a ray of hope around you,
Circling in the air,
Lighted by a prayer.

I'll be your candle on the water ...
This flame inside of me will grow.
Keep holding on you'll make it,
Here's my hand so take it.
Look for me reaching out to show
As sure as rivers flow ...
I'll never let you go.
I'll never let you go.
I'll never let you go ...

In honor of my trip today to Disney World, I thought I'd share with you the lyrics to my favorite Disney song.  There's nothing particularly notable about these lyrics from the film Pete's Dragon and, in this case, I think they lose something in translation when divorced from the music and context.  In the film, the character of Nora, played by Helen Reddy, sings from the lantern room balcony of the lighthouse where she lives with her father.  She is singing to her fiancĂ©, Paul, who she believes will still return to her although he has been lost at sea for a year.  It's a beautiful song ...

  1. I want to live in your musical and literary library. You love so many of the same words that I love, you just express it so much more eloquently than I ever could.
